Mme. Paixao organized another heavenly exhibit focusing on the Catholic Church's corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy. Through interactive activities led by the Holy Cross ShareTech Team, students learned how to practice and follow each Work of Mercy.
Mme. Paixao and the ShareTech Team organized and hosted a holy immersive experience of All Sants Day by creating an augmented reality exhibit on the lives of holy men, women, and children in our Catholic Church. Students scanned QR codes and watched videos about11 Catholic saints and 3 who are in the process of being canonized.
In honour of the 40th anniversary of the annual Marathon of Hope, started by Terry Fox in 1980, students at Holy Cross chose "40" of an activity to accomplish in Terry's memory and to raise funds to support people living with cancer. Our class chose "40 races" - but just like with Terry, it wasn't winning each race that mattered but persevering and accomplishing the challenge! A big thank you to Ms. Cooke for organizing this event at Holy Cross!
Aaron Bell shared his First Nations culture with our Grade 4 and 5 students today through interactive storytelling and music.
A big thank you to Ms. A. Cooke who organized our first Terry Fox School Walk to raise funds for cancer research! We also remember and honour Terry Fox who showed us the value of determination by running 5 373 km across Canada after having one leg amputated to raise money for cancer research.
In honour of our Blessed Mother, we prayed the rosary today as a school. The intentions for this special rosary were for the Catholic missions all over the world. Students in our class participated as readers and members of the "living rosary".
ShareTech recently offered workshops at lunchtime on iMovie Trailer and students, in pairs, entered a contest to produce a trailer on the theme of "spring". By popular vote, Maya and Vineza's trailer was the runner-up and showcased at today's assembly! Paul Davis delivered a presentation about Social Networking Safety and how to prevent cyberbullying. He provided us with many facts and useful tips to keep us safe in the online world. "Holy Cross Remembers..." (video created by Mme. Paixao)Today we had our annual Family BBQ! We had an informative and passionately delivered presentation by Professor Musisi, from the History Department at the University of Toronto, on the subject of colonialism and imperialism in the continent of Africa. Thank you, Professor Musisi, for educating us about this challenging yet important topic and sharing with us the message of an optimistic future for the African people.
We heard an inspiring talk today by Hannah Reimer, from Passages Canada, in which she shared her own story of her struggle with cultural identity and heritage, in particular "dual consciousness", of having an African heritage (she was born in Swaziland) but had a Canadian upbringing (she was adopted by a Canadian family and grew up in British Columbia).
As part of the season of Advent, students demonstrated charity by donating $2 to the Out of the Cold program. Not only did the homeless in Toronto benefit from this donation, but also the students had a comfy time at school in their pajamas! At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War I officially ended with the signing of the armistice. We commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War I (1914-1918) and remember all those who sacrificed their lives in order that we may live in peace.
Four our school's Remembrance Day Assembly, Mr. Schnurr, Mrs. Steinke, and the Glee Club led the audience in a rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan, a song which allowed us to reflect on the questions the lyrics posed about peace, war, and freedom. Our Grade 8's helped make our Curriculum Night Pizza Sale a HUGE success!
