Science and Technology Curriculum and Strands
"The primary goal of science is to understand the natural and human-designed worlds. Science refers to certain processes used by humans for obtaining knowledge about nature, and to an organized body of knowledge about nature obtained by these processes...
Technology involves the development and use of materials, tools, and processes for solving human problems and helping to satisfy human needs and desires. Many of the products of technology help humans accomplish tasks that would otherwise be very difficult or impossible to carry out...Science often uses and requires tools and processes developed by technology, and conversely, technology often employs principles, laws, theories, and processes developed by science."
- SCCAO and STAO/APSO, “Position Paper: The Nature of Science” (2006), pp. 1–2
To develop a knowledge that seeks to describe, explain, explore, and experiment with the natural and physical world, the Ontario Grades 1-8 Science & Technology Curriculum is divided into 5 strands:
|

Science Instructional Videos on Cells: Class Project (Gr. 8: 2014-2015)
In groups, students summarized and presented, in a creative format of their choice, a concept from Nelson Science & Technology Perspectives 8 Chapter 4: Cells - The Basic Units of Life. Below is a compilation of the presentations:
Rube Goldberg Machines (Gr. 8: 2015-2016)
Rube Goldberg (1873-1970), a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, was responsible for the creation of Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts, a wacky inventor who made the most simple task such as cracking an egg or brushing your teeth overly complicated with his inventions.
Inspired by the annual Rube Goldberg machine contests, students created a Rube Goldberg machine that executed 6-10 different steps (involving action/reaction or transfer of energy using various types of forces) using at least three different simple machines to drop a marble into a cup from a height of one metre.
