John A. Macdonald (Bryanna) was absent during our debate. A key figure in Confederation, Macdonald argued for union of the colonies to see greater cooperation between the English and French, reduce political deadlock, and build the intercolonial railway to increase their economic and military strength. September 1, 1864 - Representatives from the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island met in Charlottetown, P.E.I. to discuss the prospect of a Maritime Union. The United Province of Canada, composed of Canada East (now Quebec) and Canada West (now Ontario), decided to attend the meeting to convince the Maritime delegates to join with them in a larger union - Confederation. And the rest, as they say, is history - our Canadian history, to be exact! In historical role, we re-enacted the Charlottetown Conference of 1864. Discussion was heated and different perspectives were aired but ultimately, delegates cooperated in a respectful manner to achieve a common goal - Confederation! The Grade 7's delivered informative and engaging speeches in the role of an assigned historical figure. We all now understand why each of the people portrayed is important to Canadian history!
Thank you, Melanie, er, Joseph Howe, for belatedly adding your voice to the Confederation Debate held last week. Your opposition to Confederation, specifically your belief that Nova Scotia should strengthen ties with Great Britain and the United States, rather than with the other colonies of British North America, has been duly noted. Your side, unfortunately, lost the vote 5-7 in the decision to proceed with Confederation!
It is August 1864 - representatives from the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island meet in Charlottetown, P.E.I. to discuss a Maritime Union. The United Province of Canada ask to join this discussion, hoping to convince the Atlantic provinces to join with them to form a larger union. The Grade 8's passionately debated the issue of Confederation and pondered the question: should our colony join in a federal union? |
