Health Curriculum and Strands |
"Health is number one. You can't have a good offence, a good defence, good education, or anything if you don't have good health." |
Health is "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (World Health Organization). Understanding the factors that contribute to healthy development, developing a sense of personal responsibility for lifelong health, and having respect for their own health in relation to others and the world around them will allow students to improve their physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
The Ontario Grades 1-8 Health Curriculum is organized in five general topics:

Anti-Bullying PSAs: Grade 7/8 Class Project (2013-2014)
A Public Service Announcement (PSA) is a short message produced on video or audio that have the objective of raising awareness, changing public attitudes, and behaviour towards a social issue. My Grade 7/8 class (2013-2014) created a 1-minute Anti-Bullying PSA video, in pairs or groups, to address bullying in a proactive manner. As the videos' target audience was the students in our school, we decided to air the videos in the school hallway (on May 9, 2014) which students could watch in passing as they walked through the hall. We hope that the message of taking a stand against bullying was one that the student audience will reflect upon and act in a positive manner.
The YouTube video below is a compilation of my students' PSAs.

Stress Quote Posters (Grade 8: 2014-2018)
At the conclusion of our unit on Stress Management, Grade 8 students created their own motivational saying or proverb about dealing with stress. To share these messages with our school, the stress management quotes were displayed on individual posters and hung on school hallway walls.
